Five Star Educational set about conducting a national search for the perfect author to give direction to the counselor's guide, which culminated in a harmonious collaboration with author and counselor, Krista K. Bischoff. Dan says, "I was searching for an elementary school counselor with experience helping kids overcome depression, who is a true advocate for children, and is a fine writer. That's a pretty tough job description to fill. Luckily, we found Krista. I really liked the fact that she's so passionate about helping young people, that she absolutely loves her job as a counselor and that she's a very fine writer."

Ms. Bischoff says, "As an educator, I feel that my strength has always been in the area of character building. I love to listen to kids talk about what is real to them, introduce them to a variety of perspectives, encourage responsible choices, and most importantly VALIDATE them. When I first saw Every Young Person Has Challenges I felt that it was the perfect video resource in helping counselors with this process. I especially feel that young people will find the video interviews to be very validating of their own feelings and experiences."
Krista received a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master's Degree in Counseling Education and Counseling Psychology, both from Western Michigan University. She has taught first grade for eight years, second and third grades for one year and fourth grade for two years. For the past two years, she has been working with children ages 4 through 10 as an Elementary School Counselor in Battle Creek, Michigan. She sees herself as a true advocate for children and has passionately provided input on the Student Advisory Team and the School Climate Committee at Pershing Elementary in Orlando, Florida, and the NCOA School Improvement Teams at both Bangor Primary Center in Bangor, Michigan and Fairplain West School in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
When asked why fellow counselors and teachers will appreciate using the Every Young Person Has Challenges Counselor's Guide Krista replies, "Every Young Person Has Challenges will provide teachers and other professionals with words and ideas that will be very helpful in the mentoring process, and in acknowledging the struggles that all young people face. I believe that all kids appreciate adults who meet them where they are and accept them for who they are, while challenging them to grow at the same time.
