The Science of Magic
A Lab Activity Manual with Ten Teacher Lesson Plans
One Manual is for the, "Magic For Kids" Series (Elementary Grades 1-5)
Another Manual accompanies the, "Magic for Young Adults" Series
(Middle School Grades 6-8)
By Renee M. Herold, 2003

Science lesson plans: Science and magic have always been a natural combination. Just as every fantastic magic trick or illusion has a scientific explanation behind its mystery, so too every mystifying behavior in our universe has a scientific explanation that can unlock its secret.
|
|
|
|
|
Let magic be the gateway to spark your class' motivation and imagination. The sheer fun of magic can be the perfect motivator for young people to explore the scientific principles at play behind phenomena, using the Scientific Method as a framework for investigation. The payoff of discovering the science behind each and every magic trick makes the process of forming an hypothesis, collecting data and arriving at a conclusion entertaining and fun.
The Science of Magic Lab Activity Manual is the perfect source for ten class sessions of entertaining, eye-opening scientific exploration. Everything is neatly packaged into one guide: suggested activities, worksheets and follow-up and assessment tools. Here are just a few of the activities presented...
Did I Really See That? Students create "moving" images out of still pictures.
Just Dropping In. Due to changes in the state of matter, a quarter magically passes "through" a metal plate.
Water Bombs and Mystical Floating Cork. The properties of surface tension and hydrostatic force are explored.
Image is Everything. Mirrors can create some very realistic visions, including a teacher floating on thin air!
I Can't Air You! Students discover the power of air pressure by lifting objects with plastic sandwich bags and straws.
More or Less. Lessons from the supermarket. Clever packaging "tricks" make it look like we're getting more for less.
What Is It? Students poke a needle through a balloon without popping it, and explore the special properties of polymers.

How do you reach young people these days! Effective counselors and educators know that the best way to reach young people is through other young people. produced a program from the heart, which we'd like you to think of as a shortcut to communication, group discussion and personal exploration. This program will motivate and inspire young people to strive for personal improvement in their lives.
In Every Young Person Has Challenges we've cut out the narrator and allowed 15 candid young people, ages 8-12, to speak freely about their challenges and difficulties, and to share the steps they've taken towards resolving these issues. In doing so, they help us to discover the truth that every young person does have difficulties and challenges; that "you are not the only one" who is dealing with personal issues and inner conflict; and that growth is a matter of facing our challenges and difficulties, understanding them and doing our best to overcome, resolve and come to peace with them. Issues presented include:
- Divorce
- Family issues
- Peer pressure
- The role of friends
- Bullying
|
- Discrimination
- Popularity issues
- Parental drug abuse
- Depression
- Dealing with death

Every Teen Has Challenges for Ages 13-19

A Counselor's Guide for Middle and High School (Grades 7-12)

How do you reach teens these days! Every counselor recognizes the inherent challenge and, sometimes, frustration in reaching out to young adults, but we also realize that the way to reach teens these days is the same way we have always reached out to young people -- by really caring, listening and communicating. that's exactly what we've done with this combination counselor's guide and video program. We've taken the time to listen to teens, and we've produced a program from the heart, which we'd like you to think of as a shortcut to communication, group discussion and personal exploration.
In Every Teen Has Challenges, we've cut out the narrator and allowed 16 candid teenagers to speak freely about their challenges and difficulties, and to share the steps they've taken towards resolving these issues. In watching what these forthcoming teens reveal about themselves, we come to understand that part of resolving personal issues stems from understanding them, and trying new behaviors, new strategies and new ways of looking at our challenges. Innovation is one of the greatest keys in dealing with personal issues, and watching our young participants explore their issues is a study in innovation. As we come to appreciate the steps that they've taken in dealing with their difficulties, we are encouraged to take a more active role in facing our own challenges. Issues presented include:
|
|
- Discrimination
- Drug use
- Teen suicide
- Eating disorders
- and other issues
